Review:

John Wick was a surprise hit and its sequel just took the action to another level. Somehow Keanu Reeves always manages to snuff out good action or sci-fi flicks. And he knows when to abandon a franchise at its peak. Speed 2 we looking at you. The Wick franchise is anything but a Speed moniker. Nope. In fact, it is very far from it. It seems to break new ground in every installment. And this isn’t just the masterful stunts and fight scenes but the very story itself.

It also doesn’t hurt to have a star-studded cast. Adding Fishburne was a stroke of genius. Not only do these two have great on-screen chemistry but seeing them on screen together hits you right in the feels. This only furthers compliments the movie’s theme. Halle Berry is also a welcome surprise but at times feels out of sync with Reeves. Maybe it’s just that she is a better bond girl than an ex-assassin. Then there is the enigmatic Ian McShane, who brings such presence, you feel he needs to be in every scene. Perfectly cast, in fact, the only issue is not having Fishburne and Ian share a scene.

The movie picks up the plot moments after the previous film. We follow John deep inside this mysterious world. As he goes deeper than before we get glimpses into his mysterious past. Without fully realizing the franchise has managed to build a nice little world for Wick and company to play with. The third film really brings this to light. The movie is very clever and coy when it’s needed to be and manages to slow just long enough to catch your breath listen to some witty dialogue and jump right back into action.

Good action movies are hard to come by these days. Most are just too cheesy and the rest are overshadowed by the big boy franchises. John Wick is something special, it stands out among most action movies, but more importantly stands up to the big budget bad boys and just grins and flips them the bird.
