It is often shown that have been intended for a single season that will shine the brightest. But it is these very shows that crumble thereafter. I suppose it is because the core ideology is often completed by the first season. Then the studio sees the potential profit stream and orders more. This often puts the creative teams under immense pressure to try and deliver another season on the same caliber if not more. Sadly this often results in the death of a show. But there are shows that thrive. 13 Reasons Why is one of those shows.
Originally planned as a single miniseries, it caught the world by storm. Armed with a solid cast, great writing and directing it blew the lid on a very real but never spoken topic. It was a show the world needed to see. It never pulled any punches, and never let you go. Binge-worthy indeed. Then along came the second season, and fans wondered how it would work without Hanna. But it did work. Sure her character was a little shoehorned in, but I suppose it also helped the transition to shift the focus from her to the rest of the cast. It also helps emphasize the aftermath of her demise.
Season 3
Come 23 August 2019, we will be treated to the third arc of this fantastic show. Considering how the show ended, it will be interesting to see where the creators take this next. There many current “trending topics” which can be tackled. Video game generated violence may be on top of that list, but social anxiety and the ever-growing burden of high school pressure will surely play key roles.
Rumor has it that the show will be less graphic. I hope this turns out to be false. One of the reasons why the show hit so close to home was that it held nothing back. It was meant to hit you right in the feels. Like I said above, the topics are very real and the core theme of the first season is that we never see it or know until it’s too late. We are either oblivious or worse turn a blind eye. But the truth it everything we do impacts others. We never know someone’s true state of mind. So I hope this hits harder than ever. And a few more people have the veil lifted….
Here’s to season 3, and the potential lives it may save.
