Every August, Johannesburg gets invaded—not by aliens, not by superheroes, but by tens of thousands of fans who transform the city into a living, breathing pop-culture wonderland. Comic-Con Africa 2025 was no exception. In fact, this year’s edition, held at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, raised the bar so high that even Iron Man’s HUD would struggle to keep up.

With over 70,000 attendees across four jam-packed days, the event cemented itself as Africa’s biggest celebration of comics, cosplay, gaming, and geek culture. Let’s dive into the highlights—from costumes and comics to celebrities and collectibles.

Where is Fred?

Cosplay: The Heartbeat of the Con

It’s no secret that cosplay is the beating heart of Comic-Con. This year, the creativity on display was nothing short of breath-taking. Wandering the halls, you could bump into a squad of Mandalorians, pose with a near-perfect Harley Quinn, or find yourself in a face-off with a towering Pyramid Head.

Everyday Cosplay Competitions kept the atmosphere buzzing, with participants of all skill levels proudly parading their fandom.

The Championships of Cosplay were the main event, with winners securing a chance to represent South Africa on the global stage at MCM London. The stakes were high, but the craftsmanship on display—from hand-sewn armour to meticulously painted props—was jaw-dropping.

International cosplay judges like Yuji Koi and Majed Cosplay not only judged but also inspired, hosting panels where they shared tips, tricks, and hilarious stories from their own journeys.

The best part? Cosplay Central—a safe haven with changing rooms, repair stations, lockers, and photo backdrops. It turned the convention into not just a contest, but a community.

Gaming: From Esports Thrills to Indie Magic

If cosplay was the soul of the con, gaming was its adrenaline. The gaming halls were electrifying controllers clicking, keyboards clattering, and the roar of the crowd rising with every critical hit.

Esports arenas hosted showdowns in Tekken 8, Rocket League, Street Fighter 6, and EAFC, drawing large audiences and giving fans the chance to cheer for local champions. Sponsors like Doritos, Red Bull, and Telkom VS Gaming made sure the competitive spirit was alive and well.

Free-to-play zones let everyone jump in—whether you want to race in Gran Turismo 7, duel in Yu-Gi-Oh!, or embark on epic Dungeons & Dragons campaigns.

The indie gaming corner was particularly inspiring. Local developers showcased titles like Anele, a gritty narrative game born in the townships, proving that African storytelling has a strong future in global gaming.

Gaming wasn’t just about pixels—it was about possibility. Panels on careers in esports and game design reminded everyone that the next big hit might just come from right here in South Africa.

Comics & Artist Alley: Creativity on Full Display

Comic-Con wouldn’t be Comic-Con without comics, and this year’s Artist Alley was the largest ever in Africa, featuring more than 135 creators.

International stars included Carola Borelli, Declan Shalvey, Eleonora Carlini, and Elisabetta D’Amico, whose tables were constantly surrounded by fans eager for sketches and signatures.

Local legends like Jason Masters, Sean Izaakse, and Anand Ramcheron held their own, reminding us that South Africa’s comic scene is vibrant, diverse, and growing.

Special tributes were paid to the late Karl Mostert, a beloved artist whose work continues to inspire.

Live sketch battles, Q&A sessions, and panel discussions gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at the artistry and hustle it takes to bring comic worlds to life. For many, walking through Artist Alley felt like stepping into a creative wonderland—wallets may have suffered, but hearts were full.

Celebrities: Fan Moments to Remember

This year’s guest list was pure gold for TV and film buffs. Fans lined up for hours for photo ops, autographs, and Q&A sessions that blurred the line between screen and reality.

Jessie T. Usher (aka A-Train from The Boys) brought superhero swagger.

Dan Fogler (Fantastic Beasts, The Walking Dead) had fans in stitches with his humor and charm.

Misha Collins (Supernatural) received rock-star treatment, with fans celebrating his decade-long run as Castiel. (our personal favourite)

Onstage panels were heartfelt, funny, and often surprisingly candid. For many fans, these moments weren’t just meet-and-greets—they were dream-come-true experiences that made the trip worthwhile.

Stalls, Shopping & Experiences

If your budget survived Artist Alley, the vendor floor was ready to finish the job. With over 300 stalls, the shopping possibilities were endless:

Book Nook catered to literature lovers with meet-the-author events, treasure hunts, and fandom quizzes.

The KidsCon Zone partnered with Toys “R” Us to keep younger fans entertained with Minecraft tournaments, Pokémon training, and even a Slushie Bar.

Outside, food trucks, live music, and quirky activities like rage rooms and WWII reenactments gave the whole event a festival vibe.

The Atmosphere: A Village of Fandom

What makes Comic-Con Africa magical isn’t just the celebrities or the stalls—it’s the atmosphere. Strangers became friends in queue lines. Cosplayers cheered each other on. Parents introduced their kids to the fandoms they grew up with.

As one attendee put it, “It’s like the Rugby World Cup, but with lightsabers and capes.” The joy was infectious, the inclusivity undeniable, and the energy unmatched.

Final Verdict

Comic-Con Africa 2025 wasn’t just an event—it was a celebration of everything fans hold dear. From the artistry of cosplay and comics to the adrenaline of gaming and the joy of meeting heroes, it created memories that will last a lifetime.

If this year proved anything, it’s that pop culture isn’t just entertainment—it’s community. And in Africa, that community is bigger, brighter, and more passionate than ever.

Here’s to 2026.
