Dexter First Blood had some mixed reactions to say the least. The finale all but confirmed that Dexter too the path of an honourable death. It was made more meaningful, by his killer being his son. A fitting ending to him, leaving the only living Morgan to brave the cold world alone.

Death is only the Beginning

While Dexter may have been shot in cold blood, and we all saw the bullets wound and the blood escaping him, we must keep in mind he was not shot in the head or heart. His wound may have been fatal but with the extreme cold and the police almost upon him, he may have still had a few minutes left. His eyes may have closed but no one knows if his cold killer heart stopped. Not for sure anyway. All we know is he was shot and was bleeding to death.

So, what if the cops got there and managed to prevent further bleeding. But what if, they managed to save him and get him to a medical center. And what if he lived.

What if?

This is where a brilliant new show really begins. He is now in custody and on a path to recovery. As for him custodians slowly interrogate him, they learn of his true nature. The FBI soon realise that they have an asset on their hands as opposed to a typical serial killer.

Soon Dexter is fully recovered and working for the FBI. His task is simple, infiltrate a community, sniff out the real big bad and just do his thing. Essentially he starts using his unique gift to take down the criminals that get away on a technicality or where legitimate evidence is either not available or unable to obtain.

Till Death Do Us Part

This new premise allows the show to retain the best bits of the older show while introducing new dynamics. Dexter begins to find a genuine purpose for his Dark Passenger and acceptance for the most part. Pulling in Masuka and Batista as his lab rat and handler respectively could bring in just enough nostalgia to keep his older fans entertained.

With mix of changing and stagnant cast it could make for some interesting viewing. Swopping out FBI for CIA could make this a globe-trotting show. The idea of a serial killer who only kills serial killers is an absolute gem.

Having dear old Dex fall victim to his own fate may seem poetic and bring some humanity to his true nature but robs us of a truly unleashed Dexter. Something we never fully got.

Honestly, the show still has at least five seasons still in it if they played the cards right, but much like most popular shows, they could never stick the landing. They failed before, and they failed again. But there is always the retreat to the novels which are brilliant, to say the least.
