Cobra Kai is an unusual show for me. At first I refused to give it a try. I had concerns of it destroying a childhood favourite. Coupled with it becoming a cheesy cash grab. I was half right. It was cheesy, but in the best possible way. Sure it kept to the campiness of the originals but that’s what made them great I guess. See beneath the cheesy was still this life lesson learning wholesome story. Good always triumphs and all that white picket fence lore we grew up to attain.

Cobra Kai keeps to its roots and while set in modern times still has that 80’s vibe which works for it well. The show is all about values, whether that lies in family, friends, lovers or one’s obligations to the wider community. I believe it’s something needed right now. I guess a Dojo is where the heart is. (Yeah, I am gonna lay some cheese too)

Season 4

When last we left Daniel-san (Ralph Macchio) and his ex enemy -now friend Johnny (played by William Zabka) they had just finished the Al Valley Tournament. Kreese was on his way to the big house and Terry Silver had taken over Cobra Kai. The kids were torn apart in more ways than one. It seemed Terry had truly won and he would get his life-long desire to make his “No Mercy” style the only style.Well not if they unlikely pairing of Johnny and Daniel had anything to say about it. And believe me they have plenty to say… and do. There will be old feuds and news ones too, that are finally finished…

Coming to Daniel-san’s aid is non other than Chozen (Yuji Okumoto) who brings a certain presence to the show. A void felt from season 1 by the absence of late and great Pat Morita.Season 5 of Cobra Kai has a great arc and character growth. Sure the plot is a little predictable but then again isn’t that typically 80’s?But anything Karate Kid needs some great memorable fights. Cobra Kai continues to deliver on this front and creates some new fond moments for us. My favourite being the final episode fights. The actors really have settled in nicely into their alter egos and deliver much improved scenes. Sure the campiness is still there but they really push to make us suspend our disbelief.

Hee-Yah

All in all the show is the best one yet in the series. While we watch the new generation take on the reigns from the legacy characters and forge their own little space in the lovely little gem. Showing us that fighting the good fight isn’t just for superheroes. Cobra Kai is the wholesome family show that you keep going back to to relive the glory days and get that good vibe feeling all day long. Pave with tributes and life lessons there is something for even the hardest of hearts.

The show airs on Netflix this friday and sure to kick up some feathers and fulfil our deepest desire to binge.
