This weekend is ICON, and for the uninitiated, it is Durban’s original convention that revolves around gaming, comics cosplay and a damn fine time. It has grown exponentially over the years. I remember attending my first ICON in 2014. Back then it was known as Icon by the Sea. Since then it has shed its skin to become a well-recognized con. Growing from 500 attendees to over 5000 in just a few years, it is Durban’s predominant Pop Culture Convention.
As it was last year, the event will be hosted at UKZN’s Old Mutual Sports Centre. Make your way to Gate 9 on Rick Turner Road and turn into a fun-filled day. There are plenty of activities to watch or join. There will be plenty of stalls selling all our favorite goodies and delicious treats to keep our energy levels up.
The Event
Be sure to check out the Cosplay competitions, as these are some of the coolest designs by far. The Cosplayers themselves are fantastic people as well. However please be sure to ask permissions before just taking photos or grabbing props.
A personal favorite of mine is rummaging through the comic book stalls in search of a missing key issue. I swear every year I have found something that alone was worth the trip. But if comics are not your thing then there are tons other items like apparel, novelties, gaming and tons more.
Competition Time
Last but not least, we at Nerdgasm will be hosting a competition over the two days. All you have to do to enter is be there and fill in your details at the event. That’s is. There will be one prize per day that means you have two chances of winning.
