We had a blast the last time Logitech sent us their entry-level headset to test. So, imagine our delight when we got the new G733 Lightspeed to test.
This is the long-overdue replacement for the G430 which had a long and strong run since 2013. Yeah, that is like a century in tech time. But then again when you build something build it to last. Enter the new mac-daddy…
The new set is aimed primarily at PC gamers, however much like the previous device, we reviewed it is also compatible with PS4 and the too cool for school Nintendo Switch, this is via its USB dock (Included) Sadly no native Bluetooth option on PS4 which honestly is frustrating as Sony continues to lock out most 3rd party brands, obviously trying to push the own peripherals. Once again, the X Box gamers are left out in the cold with no option at all.
Aesthetics
Well there is no doubt that this model is a beauty, we were lucky enough to get the clean-cut white set, but they do have some lovely options. From a deep rich black to white and two bold colors in between, Blur and a Lilac Purple.
The plastic is lightweight but younger gamers may feel a little different. The plastic is also quite flexible which is important especially for thus rage quits were just ripped off the headsets. (Don’t act like you haven’t been there).
The actual fit is far superior to most headsets I have used, including its little brother. The padding on the ear feels good pressed against the ear and after prolonged use did not leave me feeling sweaty. I have experienced the alter often. Logitech clearly chose their material smartly and this results in very breathable padding.
The device is mated with 3 buttons, volume, power, and mute. The microphone is detachable. I found the last feature very handy. As a parent, I often leave my headset on the couch after a late night. My youngest does get hold of it and chucks it around. While most sets are durable enough to withstand a toddler’s throw, extended microphones often get the full brunt, of which many do not survive.
Logitech G Hub and Battery Life
The G733 also features the G Hub, which is software that lets you play around with settings. Here you can change the equalizer as well as the RGB settings for the gorgeous LEDs. Also included in this application is Blue Voice, which helps improve sound quality. There are plenty of options for audiophiles like noise reduction and compression. The software really does make a huge difference but once you switch over to consoles you lose this additional feature and the lack of the ability to toggle the settings can become annoying. This is more pronounced as you find your voice with deeper bass tones and background noise. The box states up to 30 hours but over the week we tested 28 hours combined in real-world conditions. This isn’t bad and I am comfortable with the battery life.
Last Word
Personally, I love this headset. I think it’s worth every penny. While the price may be a little higher than the other Logitech devices, we must keep in mind that this is a premium device. The only two drawbacks are that it lacks X Box support which hurts my Minecraft loving daughter more than it does me but still leaves a hole in the market. The second is the lack of software support for the set, surely a PS4 application should be possible.
