The only thing better than Xmas is Halloween… or is that the other way around? Well, honestly it depends on the time of year. But the month of October does put a spring in my step. I would like to think it’s the birthplace of cosplay. It’s a time for cool-looking candy and some hot popcorn and a classic horror movie. My cousin Alfee with probably rolling over laughing. You. would too if you saw me as a kid. Man, I was so afraid of those slashed flicks. Couldn’t sleep or had nightmares. And that’s why I love them now. It a something that used to scare me but I overcame that fear. I conquered it. Never mind, I still watch at least 30 min of cartoons before I sleep.

To celebrate, we hand-picked these 5 movies to watch this Halloween weekend, and it all available on Showmax.

Silence of the Lambs

Hannibal

At number 5, it something classic. Sure it is more thriller than true horror, but any movie with Anthony Hopkins is always welcomed. Sir Hopkins at Hannibal Lecter… well that just like getting extra candy while trick or treating.

Dr. Hannibal Lecter and FBI Agent Clarice Starling remain the most iconic roles of the Oscar-winning juggernauts Sir Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster, who played them three decades ago in The Silence of the Lambs, which follows Starling as she is forced to seek out the help of a manipulative cannibal in order to track down a sadistic new serial killer.

Freaky

Number 4 brings us some dark twisted humor. Essentially it is Freaky Friday but with a darker twist, blending comedy and horror. It’s a combo that’s hard to pull off but the movie makes it work.

Slasher comedy Freaky takes Freaky Friday to a whole new level when less-than-popular teenager Millie unintentionally switches bodies with the middle-aged serial killer terrorizing her town. As the body count rises and the clock ticks down, Millie and her friends have less than 24 hours to stop Murder Barbie before the change becomes permanent…

Starring Young Artist Award winner Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies, The Society) and MTV Movie Award, People’s Choice and Teen Choice winner Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers, The Break-Up), Freaky’s cast also includes Alan Ruck (Succession, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off).

The Invisible Man

Invisible Man

Sneaking in at number 3 is the smart thriller. It is very intense and entertaining. To get how good this movie is, simply refer to my wife. She never watches horror. Like she loves Dean but doesn’t watch Supernatural. However, after seeing the trailer she dragged me to watch this. yeah its that damn good.

When Cecilia’s abusive ex takes his own life and leaves her his fortune, she suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of coincidences turn lethal, Cecilia works to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.

Emmy winner Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) stars in The Invisible Man, which was named Rotten Tomatoes’ best-reviewed movie of 2020 in three categories: wide-release film, horror movie, and Australian film. The nail-biting horror is the eighth best-reviewed horror movie of all time on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 91% critics’ rating.

Inspired by HG Wells’ novel, The Invisible Man is adapted and directed by award-winning horror aficionado Leigh Whannell, who co-created the Saw franchise. The cast includes Oliver Jackson-Cohen (The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor); Black Reel award nominee Aldis Hodge (Underground, Hidden Figures); and BET and Teen Choice nominee Storm Reid (Euphoria, A Wrinkle in Time).

Blade: Trilogy

wesley snipes as Blade

Only just tossing out at number 2. Seriously the hero that really kick-started the MCU. Not only did Snipes save marvel from bankruptcy but he also showed us that serious comic book movies are a thing. It may not be on the scary side of horror but when a movie opens with a blood bath you know it is going to rock. Perfect for Halloween.

Calling all Blade fans – Marvel recently gave us awesome news: production is due to start next year on the revival of Blade, with double-Oscar winner Mahershala Ali (Green Book, True Detective, Ramy) as the iconic vampire hunter.

So what better way to celebrate Halloween than a weekend binge with Wesley Snipes in the cult comic book trilogy Blade, Blade II, and Blade: Trinity, all written by David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Dark City), who directed the third installment.

The franchise grossed over $400 million worldwide, with double-Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water, Pan’s Labyrinth) helming the sequel and a supporting cast across the series that includes Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds, Emmy nominee Jessica Biel (The Sinner), Oscar nominee and Grammy Lifetime Achievement winner Kris Kristofferson, Hellboy star Ron Perlman, The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus, and Dominic Purcell (Legends of Tomorrow, Prison Break).

It: Chapter 2

peenywise

Well, how about that? The number is actually number 1. One f the best remakes, period. While the original was one of the contributors to my fear for horror movie as a kid, the reboot made me love it again. It goes far deeper than the original. If this isn’t a Halloween film… then what is?

Twenty-seven years after their first encounter with the terrifying Pennywise, the members of the Losers Club have grown up and moved away, until a devastating phone call brings them back.

Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty, Interstellar) stars as the adult Beverly Marsh, multiple-BAFTA winner James McAvoy (His Dark Materials and X-Men’s young Charles Xavier) plays Bill Denbrough, and Emmy winner Bill Hader (Barry) received four separate awards nominations for his role as the adult Richie Tozier.

A stellar cast of youngsters reprises their roles from the first film, including Teen Choice nominees Sophia Lillis (I Am Not Okay With This), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) and Jeremy Ray Taylor (Are You Afraid of the Dark?), MTV Movie Awards winner Jack Dylan Grazer (Shazam!, We Are Who We Are), and Critics Choice’ nominee Jaeden Martell (Knives Out, St. Vincent). Bill Skarsgård (The Devil All the Time, Castle Rock) also returns in his Teen Choice-nominated role as Pennywise.
