If you’re a film lover in KwaZulu-Natal, you already know there’s something electric in the air. Nu Metro has just opened their flagship cinema complex at Gateway Theatre of Shopping, Umhlanga (launched 3 October 2025) and it’s not just your usual upgrade — this is cinema scaled up, re-imagined, and immersive in ways most of us have only dreamed of.

First Impressions: Like Dubai, Yet Uniquely Ours

When people think of world-class cinemas, think Dubai, with its huge multiplexes, luxury VIP offerings, enormous screens, immersive formats, plush seating, and attention to every detail. What Nu Metro has done at Gateway is bring many of those same ingredients home.

Luxury and Comfort: VIP cinemas with leather recliners, exclusive lounges, gourmet menus — comparable to what you might find in the most opulent cinema in Dubai.

Immersive Tech: Ultra HD, laser projection, Dolby Atmos sound, all help give that sense of “cinema of the future” that Dubai cinemas are known for.

Diverse formats: Instead of just having one premium large-format auditorium, Nu Metro has layered in multiple cutting-edge experiences (ScreenX, 4DX, Xtreme, Kidz, VIP), much like the multiple high-end, speciality formats you’d find in a top-line chain in Dubai.

You get that feeling of stepping into a theatre that’s beyond just movie watching, it’s an event — something Dubai excels at — but with a South African flavour, aware of local moviegoer preferences, pricing, loyalty, and so on.

What’s On Offer: The Formats That Make It Special

Here are some of the standouts that are taking the Gateway cinema from “just good” to “next-level”:

ScreenX – 270° Panoramic Immersion. This is the first ScreenX auditorium in South Africa. This is our personal favourite already.  The format uses three screens: one large central screen (the traditional main screen) and two flank walls (left and right), so that visuals extend onto the side walls, wrapping your field of vision for certain scenes. That idea is similar to some of the immersive theatres in international locations like Dubai, which also have multiple projection surfaces or curved wrap-around screens to draw you in.

Not every part of a film may use all three walls (that’s typical with ScreenX globally), but when it does, the effect is pretty breathtaking — you feel more “inside” the world of the film, rather than just watching it. A great recommendation is F1

4DX – Multi-Sensory Cinema 4DX is one of Nu Metro’s more dramatic formats. You get motion-seats that sync with action (no hydraulics, but servo motors etc.), environmental effects (wind, mist, scents, air blasts, even some water spray), smoke, fog, lightning, etc. All in sync with what’s happening on-screen. It’s an experience that turns a blockbuster action movie (or any film with a lot of environmental/scene transitions) into something visceral. If you want excitement, immersion, surprise — 4DX delivers.

Xtreme / Large Premium Format For pure scale and cinematic fidelity: huge screens (floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall in some locations), 4K Ultra HD laser projection, Dolby Atmos sound, premium seating, powerful visuals. These are the “cinema as spectacle” auditoria. Perfect for films that want to overwhelm you (visually and sonically), or for those times when you want maximum “wow” from a cinema visit.

Kidz Cinema / Kids-Only Auditorium Recognising that families and younger audiences deserve their own space, there’s a dedicated kid-friendly auditorium in the Gateway complex. This helps make the cinema experience more inclusive: special lighting, distraction-friendly design, possibly contenting to appropriate age group, making going to the movies less of a stress in terms of “my kid will get bored or restless.”

VIP / Luxury Experiences  Cinemas with lounge areas, in-cinema dining, full-service bar, leather recliners, lush surroundings. Something you might see in high-end cinemas in Dubai, but now more accessible locally.

Why It Matters: Local Impact & Value

Raising the standard: For Umhlanga and the greater Durban region, this is a major upgrade in terms of cinema offerings. When people can access these immersive formats without having to travel to a mega city, it enriches local culture and entertainment. Gateway Mall has always been more than just shopping. The new cinema adds to its pull — for families, couples, movie buffs — giving people more reasons to spend time there beyond retail.

This move signals that cinema operators in South Africa are keeping pace with global innovations. The fact that Nu Metro is bringing in world-class formats like ScreenX (first in SA), laser projection, Dolby Atmos, 4DX etc., means consumers expect more, and providers will have to deliver.

Small Caveats & What to Look Out For

With immersive formats (ScreenX, 4DX), value for money depends on the movie. If the film is visually rich, action-heavy, or built for spectacle, these formats shine. For quieter dramas, the regular or VIP theatres may give a better balance. Seats, pricing, and ticket availability, premium formats cost more, and booking ahead is likely wise, especially on popular movie nights or weekends.

Comfort vs novelty: some people love motion seats and environmental effects; others prefer minimal distractions. It’s great that there are choices.

Final Word: Gateway’s Cinema is a Game-Changer

Nu Metro at Gateway isn’t just reopening a cinema space; it’s reinventing what going to the movies can be for KwaZulu-Natal. If you’ve ever flown to Dubai and visited their high-end multiplexes, you’ll recognise many of the hallmarks here: immersive tech, luxury touches, outstanding sound and vision, multiple premium formats, a focus on comfort.

And what makes this version special is that it’s being done with local context in mind — price realities, family needs, loyalty programs, convenience. For moviegoers in Umhlanga, this is an invitation: to see movies not just as entertainment, but as an experience.

If you haven’t already, mark your calendar, book a ticket (maybe in 4DX or ScreenX just once), and get ready: cinema’s never going to feel quite the same again.
