The Disney and Fox acquisition is finally over. It felt like forever for Marvel fans. All who have been waiting for their favorite band of Merry Mutants to return to Marvel. Though those are not the only assets the Mickey Mouse organization will get their white-gloved hands on. Among the treasures are Avatar, Aliens and the Simpsons to name but a few. Yeah, that’s right the Xenomorph is now a Disney character. (Does that make the queen a Princess?)
Mighty Ducks bring mighty bucks
The new may not be a huge surprise. We knew it was a done deal. Especially when the House of Mouse threw another few billion to squash Comcast’s bid. Chump change for the giant. But while having all the lucrative brands will certainly help fast track an ROI, it was not the main objective. Disney Plus is the prime target. Poised to go toe to toe with the king of streaming, Netflix. Fox has a few holding that will both speed up and augment the streaming platform that the almighty Disney is developing. Compounded by the brands it will now own it could make them the king of streaming very soon.
For us as the consumer this will be great, it will improve the variety of content on both platforms as well as potentially reduce subscription fees. But more than that has the might of the hugest corporation in the business behind our favorite brands is all we ever wanted. It will ensure our beloved characters live on.
In the not too Distant Future
It will be interesting to see how long it takes for Disney to introduce the XMEN to the MCU. Looking back to when Sony and Disney made the historic share deal, Marvel completely re-arranged the movie schedule to accommodate Spiderman. At that point, it was easy to do, especially since they were in principle only introducing one character into Civil War. Also, Peter’s origin could easily be worked into the current timeline. The XMEN brings complexities, since their origins or mutants in particular dates as far back as Egyptian times (Apocalypse). How do you then explain their sudden existence? Where were they when Loki invaded earth? Or when Ultron went “Stark” raving mad. Yep once again the X-men are causing more problems than actually helping. Deadpool and Cable could have it easier though, with DP being the 4th wall breaking champion that he is. And Cable with his uncanny similar Thanos looks could still be molded in since he is from a distant future.
Besides the films or TV, there will also be other benefits, most importantly is the biggest money spinner, merch. This is where they make the real money. And for years we have been deprived of proper XMEN merch especially for action figures and statues. This is surely going to change and change fast.
The future does look brighter for fans, and so what if Disney is edging itself towards a monopolistic position. All the consumer wants is fun movies, merch to match and the chance to see a Xenopmorph at the next Disney on Ice. So strap on and let’s get ready to crank it up to 11.
