Free Comic Book Day 2019

I grew up in a small town on the outskirts of Durban, while this enabled me a great childhood it did have drawbacks. One of them is the difficult task of obtaining comic books. CNA was a go-to place but I don’t need to tell you the dismal range they stocked. And so I resorted to sourcing them from Johannesburg. It was good but it always lacked that personal experience that we comic collectors desire. A few years ago my wife introduced me to Project Mayhem (biggest regret of her life ). There I met Reza and Naseemah. I didn’t know at that time but they were on a path to greatness. See over the years not only have they grown into one of South Africa prime collectibles store but more importantly they have blown up the geek community. They helped take Durban Cosplay to another level. They have had mad Black Friday deals. Then there are their infamous movie screenings. But this year they decided to top all of that.

Free Comic Book Day is an international event held on the 1st Saturday of May every year. This year in coincided with May the 4th  which is Star Wars day. The Project Mayhem Team held an official inaugural even at Westville Mall. To say the least, it was LIT AF.

It was a fun-filled day for the entire family. All one had to do was pitch up and get a free comic book. It doesn’t get better than that.  But with the PM guys, there is always more.

Cosplay

Let’s start off with Cosplay, which is for the uninitiated Costume Play. Plenty of participants arrived to register and partake in the cosplay competition. There were candidates of all ages. I recall standing there and seeing Jedi’s and Superheroes and even a cute little Goku. It was geek heaven. It was a fabulous mix of first-time cosplayers along with veterans. Little kids dressed as their favorite heroes. And the competition was well orchestrated so that all factions had an equal opportunity with tons of prizes to be won. Topping it all was the attendance of three of South Africa’s leading cosplayers, namely Jinxkittiecosplay, Foxycosplay and RiverLight cosplay who were the competition judges.

Mr. Comic Con and CO

Then there was comic socialite Zaid Motala from ZHM Entertainment, who MC’d the event and kept the crowd going with his clever quips and warming smile. Also covering the event was Ruan Swanepoel from EXP Streams, an avid Youtuber with mad VX skills. Happe Chappe another great vlogger also attended. Of course, we were there too. Both Zaid, Happe Chappe and EXP offer great entertainment on the net. And having them here simply added to the festivities.

Only the Begining

FCBD had indeed come home to Durban, and judging by that fantastic turnout it is here to stay. So if you have missed out on this one don’t stress. Just follow one or more of the mad  FCBD teams as mentioned above to stay updated on current geek events. Actually, follow them all. The all produce great content. (Links below)

See you at the next event!!!
